Home Photoshoots for Newborn Babies, your questions answered!

Updated: Jan 23

Mobile newborn photographer - Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire & Sheffield

Newborn photoshoots can often seem like a bit of a mystery, we all know what to expect from the usual studio shoots for adults, but what do you do with a tiny baby?

As a mobile photographer, I bring the studio to you in your home, which can often throw up a whole new host of questions for new parents. Fear not, I've put together some of my most frequently asked questions to help you!

What age should baby be?

Newborn sessions are best when your baby is between 3-21 days new,  this is because they are still tiny, sleepy and have that gorgeous newborn curl.

Why are your sessions in the morning?

My home sessions are scheduled to all start between 10 – 11 am.

As a natural light photographer, the morning light is a lot softer and more flattering than the harsh midday and early afternoon sun. In the afternoon we risk losing light as well especially during the grey winter months.

What kit do you bring with you?

As we all know, caring for a baby's needs brings a whole host of kit. But essentially, they're pretty tiny. My kit is designed with you, your baby and your home in mind.

I have a low level, flat bed which is layered with plenty of cushioned blankets and fabrics. These essentially create the 'backdrop' for the baby's photographs.

My small 'doughnut' style beanbag has been specially made for Newborn Photographers, baby can lie curled up while we place Mum/Dad or even their sibling's hands around them to achieve some beautiful black and white images.

I will bring along a selection of handmade photography props to use during the session, styled specifically for your baby. Many of my props are handmade, from natural fibres and are sourced from local UK businesses.

How long is the session?

For very young babies (3-21 days old) the sessions are between 2-3 hours depending on your newborn. Baby runs the show, and everything is done at her pace. We take time to settle, feed, change, cuddle and soothe. Then when I start the posing its all done slowly and gently and I don’t clock watch, and I won’t rush baby.

Can parents or older siblings be in the photos?

Yes of course, if you are wanting this then please discuss with me before your session.

When should I book?

I book a limited amount of sessions each month so that each client receives my personal attention. To ensure your desired session time please contact me as soon as you know you would like to book a newborn session. Most bookings are taken after the 20 week scan.

How do I book when I'm not sure when baby will be born?

I will pencil your due date in my calendar as soon as you book. you will then contact me when your baby arrives to schedule your session.
